The Month in Social

Welcome to 3MZ’s monthly social updates. In these posts, our digital team will fill you in on what’s been happening in the world of social media over the past month. Here are our updates for October:

On the digital team here at 3MZ, we deal with negative feedback on our clients’ social channels every day. But what if we could spin that negativity around and turn it into an original, inventive campaign?

That’s what KFC have done. As they prepare to launch their new fries, they’ve been promoting tweets complaining about how bad their old fries are. These tweets make you stop, wonder what’s going on, and then Google KFC to find out what they’re up to. Which is, of course, exactly the objective.

We’re at a point in digital marketing where every major brand has a social media presence and the vast majority run ads on platforms like Instagram and Twitter. Increasingly, users are aware and savvy enough to scroll past the obvious ads. So, to achieve maximum value and effectiveness, we must think outside the box. Spending your precious budget promoting tweets that directly criticise your products may seem bonkers at first, but in reality it’s exactly the sort of unexpected move that will make users take notice and get journalists writing about your exploits.

Facebook continues to update its ad offering in the run up to Christmas

Black Friday and Christmas are just around the corner, and brands are already beginning to battle it out to get their products noticed online. Facebook is equally ready for the festive frenzy and has recently announced a whole new set of updates to its ad products. Users can now create their own overlay for dynamic ads to visually promote discounted products, and experiment with holiday-specific templates and stickers in the video creation kit.

Twitter tests new profile features … but will it really ditch the like button?

Twitter is trying to hard to enhance conversations on the platform in a bid to reduce amount of hateful abuse that takes place throughout the network. A series of profile updates are currently being tested, including presence indicators (a Whatsapp style status which helps users describe what they’re doing whilst tweeting) and ‘ice breakers’ to kick start more discussions.

The Twitter plans also include a design update to the way conversations are laid out, making them look more like group texts. A dedicated reply button is also being added under each tweet. There have also been rumours that Twitter is also going to get rid of its like button, but don’t hold your breath – the platform has announced that that there are no plans to do so in the near future.

Facebook adds music to profiles

Remember the good old days of MySpace, where you could add all your fave tunes straight to your page? Well, Facebook is currently testing a feature which will allow you to pin songs to your profile, under a new “Music” tab, linking back to the artist’s page. And while we’re on the subject….

Instagram has partnered with the online streaming service Soundcloud

Soundcloud users can now share tracks directly to Instagram stories, using a simple share button at the bottom of the song. Anyone wanting to listen can then click “Play on Soundcloud”, which links directly through to the site.
